For the second time in three years GreenPrisons will exhibit and present at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Association’s annual training conference. This year’s training conference in Myrtle Beach runs from November 13-16, 2016. Conference organizers anticipate over 450 attendees and more than 40 exhibitors.

As some of you, I've been working with Planting Justice—a community organization that provides affordable food to local communities while offering full-time, green jobs to formerly incarcerated individuals.In the past 5 years, Planting Justice has built nearly 400 edible gardens, taught food justice curriculum to thousands of Oakland youth, and helped 20 formerly incarcerated men transition from San Quentin State Prison into full-time, salaried positions.

The energy surrounding the green aisle at the ACA Convention in New Orleans was exciting and showed promise for correctional institutions seeking sustainable practice solutions. Barely three and a half years after forming the Clean and Green Committee, ACA has seen the interest in sustainable technology and products grow to such an extent exhibitors were given the opportunity to exhibit at this year’s 144th Congress of Correction. Ten companies, including GreenPrisons, filled the “Green Aisle” with activity up and down the aisle throughout the conference.

As the planet’s population and industrial output continues to grow, water scarcity and water stress will be experienced in more and more regions of the United States and the world in general. Conservation can take us so far but beyond there will be a need for creative thinking and the development of alternative sources of water.
