Barely three and a half years after forming the Clean and Green Committee, ACA has seen the interest in sustainable technology and products grow to such an extent exhibitors were given the opportunity to exhibit at this year’s 144th Congress of Correction. Ten companies, including GreenPrisons, filled the “Green Aisle” with activity up and down the aisle throughout the conference.

Alabama Department of Corrections launches pilot project using propane autogas for work-release vans. For the Alabama Department of Corrections, ferrying inmates to and from work-release jobs had become increasingly costly in recent years. Their 15-passenger vans average almost 5,000 miles of travel a month, and gasoline for the fleet of 77 vans totaled about $1.3 million a year.

As the planet’s population and industrial output continues to grow, water scarcity and water stress will be experienced in more and more regions of the United States and the world in general. Conservation can take us so far but beyond there will be a need for creative thinking and the development of alternative sources of water.

Kentucky’s “Warden of the Year” Joe Meko, is a 35 year veteran with experience in both the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and the Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC). Meko began his career in the BOP in May of 1979, and started to work for the DOC as Warden of the Little Sandy Correctional Complex, one day after his retirement from the Bureau on September 1, 2007.....

ACA has agreed to designate a "Green Aisle" with 12 dedicated booths to sustainable products, technologies and services at the upcoming ACA Congress in Salt Lake City. This is a huge concession for them and something they have not done before so I'm hoping we can fill the booths....

On January 15 GreenPrisons along with the Memphis City Jail hosted the first regional Sustainability Forum. This unique event drew correctional practitioners from around the region as well as participants from other agencies of local and state government to hear from a variety of companies with a history of working with correctional agencies.
