It was the winter of 2012 when I visited the Noble Correctional Institution in Ohio to observe their sustainability programs. Tops on my list of things to see was the Big Hanna in-vessel composter. Warden Tim Buchannan was justifiably proud of all his programs at the institution, but the Big Hanna was a different way of doing business.

In a national press release on August 20 GreenPrisons announced the establishment of a fund to support training and technical assistance provided by GreenPrisons, as well as scholarships to cover registration, and travel costs related to attending the National Symposium on Sustainability in Corrections each year.

GreenPrisons joins the American Jail Association in the first AJA sponsored webinar on sustainability focused on jails November 16 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. The webinar is free and open to practitioner and corporate members alike. This first of two webinars prior to the AJA conference in Austin next April will explore the basics of sustainability including “7 Steps to Sustainability” as identified by Paul Sheldon and Gene Atherton.

The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) hosted the first national workgroup on sustainability in corrections in Aurora, Colorado. April 24-28 and GreenPrisons was there. The meeting was facilitated by Stacy Fitzsimmons of SNF writing Solutions. With Stacy’s guidance the group developed the first comprehensive look at sustainability in corrections and drafted a list of specific outcomes the group would like to see accomplished in the coming months ahead.
