GreenPrisons Founder and CEO joined ACA President Mary Livers in cutting the cake to celebrate the establishment of ACA’s Clean and Green Committee as a permanent, standing committee with a new name. The Committee will now be known as the Sustainability-Oriented and Environmentally Responsible Practices Committee.

As evidenced by articles elsewhere on this website the ACA committee that focuses on sustainability in corrections and that was the catalyst for the creation of GreenPrisons, Inc. achieved a milestone this year. As noted elsewhere, the Clean and Green Committee became the Sustainability-Oriented and Environmentally Responsible Practices Committee as a result of the recent ACA elections.

GreenPrisons joins the American Jail Association in the first AJA sponsored webinar on sustainability focused on jails November 16 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. The webinar is free and open to practitioner and corporate members alike. This first of two webinars prior to the AJA conference in Austin next April will explore the basics of sustainability including “7 Steps to Sustainability” as identified by Paul Sheldon and Gene Atherton.

In little more than twelve months the Green Aisle at the American Correctional Association has more than doubled in size. This unique exhibit area within the larger exhibit hall, allows participants at the conference to focus on exhibitors of sustainable products and services.

Barely three and a half years after forming the Clean and Green Committee, ACA has seen the interest in sustainable technology and products grow to such an extent exhibitors were given the opportunity to exhibit at this year’s 144th Congress of Correction. Ten companies, including GreenPrisons, filled the “Green Aisle” with activity up and down the aisle throughout the conference.

On January 15 GreenPrisons along with the Memphis City Jail hosted the first regional Sustainability Forum. This unique event drew correctional practitioners from around the region as well as participants from other agencies of local and state government to hear from a variety of companies with a history of working with correctional agencies.
